ESPERANZA SPALDING

Esperanza Spalding

BOCASTRIA

Bocastria, dubbed “Austin’s Firecrackers” by Austinist.com, exploded onto the music scene in 2006 with its original fusion of Latin Rock and Tejano music. Bocastria’s first release, “Enter the groove,” was recorded by Grammy Award Nominee, Jonny Martinez, (son of Tejano Music Hall of Famer, Anselmo Martinez). In just one short year, Bocastria is being recognized as one of the top Latin bands to emerge from Austin, TX. On May 17, 2007 the band was honored by the City of Austin and Mayor Will Wynn with “Bocastria Day.” On October 21, 2008, Bocastria will release, "Texicana," its first full-length album. "Texicana," takes you on a journey from Rock to Ranchera to Tejas Reggaeton - all in Spanglish harmony. "Texicana" describes a unique musical style that is Bocastria’s own, and it places the band at the forefront in defining what Latin Fusion sounds like in Texas today.

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO

This June, Alejandro Escovedo released his 9th solo album Real Animal. Produced by Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T.Rex, Thin Lizzy), Real Animal is a collective journey through Escovedo’s various musical incarnations from punk rock to string quintets and is as introspective as it is retrospective. Recalling the people, places and influences that helped shape his career, Real Animal represents the primitive aspect of Escovedo’s music - the instinct, the urgency and a survivor mentality that fuels his musical passion.

JOHNATHAN HUGHES

August Evening (I did a lot of the music for it) keeps racking up awards an nominations. It just got nominated for two Spirit Awards. It previously won at the Woodstock and LA Film Festivals. It'll open in theatres in 208. This year's holiday offering, Robot Holiday, is awaiting your perusal. This one blows away all of our previous holiday efforts, with songs and performances by Rob Lynch, Jesse Mank, David Mussen, Joelle Labert, Narayan Padmanabha, Guillermo Izquierdo, and more!

MARIACHI LOS CAMPEROS

The Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Los Camperos—under the direction of visionary and traditionalist Nati Cano and comprising of the finest musicians from Mexico—takes the stage for Fiesta Navidad, a rousing Christmas celebration for young and old alike. Lively music and colorful costumes combine for a magical experience as the artists celebrate the traditional fiesta of La Posada (the 400-year-old traditional reenactment of Joseph and Mary's pilgrimage to Bethlehem). The afternoon culminates with an audience sing-along of seasonal favorites and carols, including "Feliz Navidad" and "Noche de Paz" ("Silent Night").

WALTER MORCIGLIO

Walter Morciglio, nominee for the 2008 Latin Grammys Awards.

SULTANS OF STRING

Join the Sultans of String in their exploration of world rhythms in this mesmerizing global concert experience. The Mariposa Folk Foundation describes them as “Just awesome original Gypsy-jazz-flamenco! Chris presents a wild and improvised musical journey. Along with Kevin Laliberte, the band romps through an energized adventure of Latin, jazz and folk rhythms. Chris McKhool’s violin playing is a treat!” Chris McKhool (violin) grew up in a house bursting with music - his piano-playing mother was born in Cairo and his ancestors on his father’s side were from Lebanon (McKhool is usually spelled Makhoul in K’fir Mishki, Lebanon). Together with Kevin Laliberte (guitar) he has drawn on the rhythms of Spain, Morocco, his own Middle Eastern heritage, French Manouche Gypsy-jazz, and his trips across the globe to create works that are “rich, textured, original and fun!”

INSTITUTO MEXICANO DEL SONIDO (MIS)

Following the success of last year’s Mexican Institute of Sound (MIS) debut ‘Méjico Máxico’, MIS is back with “Piñata” (July 24th - Nacional Records), an infectious pastiche of electronica, dub, cha cha cha, cumbia, spoken word and other musical treats waiting to burst out of its paper maché shell. The new album features a number of guests including members of Tom Tom Club, Fantastic Plastic Machine, and Babasonicos. In the past year, MIS as received widespread acclaim from outlets like Spin, NY Times, and Urb, as well as radio support from such tastemakers as KCRW (Los Angeles), Indie 103 (Los Angeles), KEXP (Seattle) and KUT (Austin).

RAMON TARANCOS

Ramon Taranco was born in Havana, Cuba. His mother is Mexican- American and his father Cuban. At age five, Tarancowas enrolled in a school run by an order of French-Canadian nuns and priests from Quebec City. As the Cuban Revolution was flowering, Ramon's father got into political hot water and was forced to flee Cuba overnightwith his wife and son. On the recommendation of the Canadian nuns, the Taranco’s moved to Toronto.

LAZCANO MALO

What is KPFT?

Who Owns KPFT?

KPFT is licensed to the Pacifica Foundation. Pacifica was founded by Lew Hill in 1949 and pioneered the concept of listener-supported radio as an alternative to the market-driven media of the time. Pacifica's programming is not supported or controlled by advertisers. The Pacifica Foundation is a non-profit corporation and is an IRS 501 (c)(3) charitable organization.

Where is KPFT located?

We broadcast from a 700' tower just outside of Houston. KPFT's studios and business offices are located in an 85 year old house in the heart of the city of Houston.

When did KPFT go on the air?

KPFT was founded by journalist Larry Lee who convinced Pacifica to establish a listener-supported station in Houston. Lee felt that it was important for the Houston community to have an alternative voice to standard radio fare. KPFT took to the airwaves in March 1970 and after a tumultuous start, Larry Lee served as KPFT's first station manager. His perseverance and foresight embody the spirit of KPFT and Pacifica Radio.
